Welcome Mikey to the Maritime Aquarium! The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is pleased to welcome a grey seal named Mikey. He is the first grey seal to live in the Aquarium and will reside in Pinniped Cove with harbor seals Rasal, Leila, Feisty, Gracie, and Sono. Like harbor seals, greys seals can be found in Long Island Sound during the winter months when they migrate south in search of warmer waters. While both species can be found in Long Island Sound, there are distinct differences that will help guests tell them apart. A grey seal's most distinct characteristic is its long, curved nose. Grey seals are also larger than harbor seals. Once fully grown, they can weigh up to 880 pounds and measure up to 10 feet in length. Mikey was born at Brookfield Zoo Chicago on February 17, 2024. He may not be visible at all times as he adjusts to his new home. The Maritime is located at 10 N. Water St., with easy parking in the Maritime Garage. New Barrel Launch Event for SONO 1420 Finished at Sea Bourbon. Saturday, January 25 at 5:00 p.m. at SONO 1420 America’s Maritime Distillery, 19 Day St. Join SONO 1420 founder/distiller Ted Dumbauld for an exclusive tasting event. Finished at Sea bourbon follows in the traditions of pre-prohibition bourbon makers who aged their whiskey on flatboats floating on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Instead of flatboats on rivers, SONO 1420 whiskey is aged and exposed to the elements on the Long Island Sound aboard oyster boats operated by Norwalk’s Copps Island Oysters. The bourbon was a Silver Medal Winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The event takes place at SONO 1420’s popular Tasting Room bar and retail space in historic South Norwalk. Purchasers of a limited release bottle will receive a complimentary half-dozen Copps Island Oysters, hand shucked by Precious Oysters. Oysters will also be available for purchase. Free event; RSVP at https://bit.ly/1420finishedatsea. @sono1420 @coppsislandoysters @preciousoysters

MASC: Unmasking Identity, Redefining Masculinity Art Exhibition, now on view through March 20, at The Norwalk Art Space (455 West Ave.). The exhibition is curated by 2024-25 Korry Fellow Juanita Sunday and features regional artists Carl Bocicault, Aaron Samuel Davis, Fubunation, Tyler Goldchain, Imo Nse Imeh, Iyaba Ibo Mandigo, Tea Montgomery, Sain't Phifer, Andre Rochester, Bizzie Ruth, Dario Tejada, Kamar Thomas, and Yves Wilson. MASC explores the intricate intersections of masculinity and Blackness, illuminating the complex layers of identity, expression, and societal expectation. The exhibition examines the metaphorical "masks" worn to navigate a world rife with stereotypes and cultural pressures. Through photography, painting, video, sculpture, film, and multimedia installations, MASC challenges monolithic notions of masculinity, offering a nuanced exploration of strength, vulnerability and self-reclamation. Each piece invites audiences to witness the delicate balance between the external personas shaped by societal expectations and the authentic selves seeking liberation and visibility. The gallery and café are open Wednesdays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays & Sundays from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Admission is always free.
