Call for Artists. The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum located at 295 West Ave. is calling for artists for a juried exhibition titled, Hues of Freedom. The submission deadline is August 8 at midnight. The exhibition will open on October 20 with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and run through December 18. Artist and Trustee Gail Ingis will select approximately 30 works from digital submissions. As the word “freedom” can be subject to diverse interpretations, this exhibition will explore how artists depict the concept in their work, filtered through their creative process and drawn from their unique visualization of this multi-faceted concern, be it in life, art, or history. The Museum will welcome entries in the following categories: fine arts media, watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, and colored pencil. Artists can enter their work by visiting the Museum’s website at www.lockwoodmathewsmansion.com.

New Glover Avenue Residential & Retail! Norwalk’s Glover Avenue runs between I-95 to the Route 7 Connector and the Norwalk River. Across the river are the offices of Merritt 7 along Main Avenue. Building and Land Technology (BLT) is striving to turn what was once a little-known street near the edge of Norwalk into a burgeoning new residential and retail district.
“This building at 300 Glover Ave. is the third building of what we call The Curb,” Ted Ferrarone, BLT co-president, said during a tour of the recently opened and rapidly filling building. The Curb is focused on providing high-end apartment units for a variety of professionals, but the name emphasizes its pet-friendly nature. With easy access to the Norwalk River Valley Trail, which runs right by the property, on-site grooming facilities in each building and a set of policies designed with pet owners in mind, younger dog owners have gravitated toward the apartments. “After this, we’re going to work on the second phase of what we call North Seven,” Ferrarone said of BLT’s plans to continue developing the lots they own on both sides of Glover Avenue. Ultimately, Ferrarone indicated, the development will include 1,300 units, including 130 affordable housing units. Public spaces, retail locations that offer essentials and easy access to transportation compose what BLT anticipates as a winning combination. Undergirding the development are improvements to the Merritt 7 Train Station, which are currently underway and scheduled for completion this year. Not only will the new station serve six cars instead of just four cars along the Danbury Line, but it will also provide a footbridge across the tracks and pedestrian access across the river. thecurbapts @north7norwalk

Maritime Aquarium Seeking Volunteers for Summer Season. Older teens and adults can volunteer now for a fun, rewarding summer guiding guests through butterfly encounters and other exhibits. The Aquarium is also accepting applications for its empowering volunteer program for high school students. The Aquarium is seeking volunteers age 17 and older for its new Summer Stewards volunteer program, which asks for a commitment only from June 4 through Sept. 5. And it's inviting students 14 to 18 years old into ECHO (Education Conservation Heritage and Outreach), a program where teens share the issues of marine debris with Aquarium guests while also participating in related field work with Aquarium staff. The Aquarium also recently announced that it has been awarded nearly $250k in ARPA funding to partner with Norwalk Public Schools through the State's summer enrichment program. It will support the Aquarium’s partnership with NPS in hosting summer school for public school students struggling at grade level. Last year the program included nearly 800 K-3 students, and will be expanded this year with NPS to include more than 1,100 students in grades K-8. The students spend time in the classrooms and on the floor at the Aquarium, outside along the coast, and on the R/V Spirit of the Sound vessel, all with a focus on STEM. The Aquarium is located at 10 North Water St. with easy parking in the Maritime Garage. Learn more and sign up at www.maritimeaquarium.org/volunteer. @maritimeaquarium
