Vienna Comes to Norwalk

Vienna at the turn of the 20th century embraced elegance, experimentation, and outright decadence in one of the most electric artistic climates of all time. Johann Strauss Jr.’s enchanting melodies, found most memorably in works like The Blue Danube Waltz and Die Fledermaus Overture, coexisted with Richard Strauss’s witty and wry tone poem, Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks and his riot-inducing opera Salome, from which we will perform the searing orchestral showpiece, Dance of the Seven Veils. Alban Berg’s boundary-pushing Altenberg Lieder, which Stravinsky called one of the most perfect works of the 20th century, adds a unique and captivating beauty to the program.
